I copied Samuel's will at the Albany County courthouse
(Schenectady was at that time part of Albany County). I transcribed the will

 

Samuel Arentse Bradt’s Will


In the name of God Amen I Samuel Bradt of the Town of Schenectady in the County of Albany and State of New York being weak in body but of perfect sound mind and memory Blessed be God therefore considering the frailty and fragility of this Life the Certainty of death and the uncertain time and hours thereof do therefore this twenty sixth day of April one Thousand Seven hundred and ninety one make public and declare this my last Will and Testament in Manner and form following first I give (unreadable) commend my immortall soul after its departure out of this frail body into the Mercifull hands of God that give it me hoping and trusting for the pardon of all my sins and transgressions in and through the meritorious passions of the blessed son of God Jesus Christ my redeemer and as for my body I recommend to the Earth to be interred in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executors herein after named and as for my worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to Bless me with in this Life after my Just debts and funeral Charges are paid I give devise and bequeath in Manner following

Imprimis

I give devise and bequeath all my real and personal Estate of what kind or nature (unreadable) and Wheresoever unto my dearly beloved wife Catharina during the time that she remains my widow and no longer She my said wife to make no waste or destruction thereof But to live out of the profits and Income thereof

Item

Immediately after my wife remarries I give and bequeath unto my two sons Arent and Cornelius all my waggons (unreadable) plows Harrows and all my other farming tools and implements of farming and also all my horses and my Negro man named (unreadable) To Hold to them my said two sons arent and Cornelius and to their heirs and assigns to be divided between them share and share alike to the one no more than to the other

I give and bequeath unto my son Cornelius my negro boy named Jack to Hold to him my said son Cornelius and to his heirs and assigns

I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Catharina Milch Cow to Hold to her my said Daughter Catharina her heirs and assigns

Item

All my household furniture and Implements of Household I give and bequeath unto my three Daughters to Suster wife of John Peek Susanna Wife of Lucas Wyngaard Veeder and Catharina To be divided amongst them share and share alike to the one no more than to the other

Item

I give devise and bequeath unto my said two sons Arent and Cornelius and to their heirs and assigns all my real estate I now dwell with all the building thereon Erected just as the Same now is in my possession to Hold to them my said two sons Arent and Cornelius and to their heirs and Assigns for ever ___ ___ order and it is my w___ ___ ___ two sons Arent and Cornelius between them pay unto my two daughters Suster and Susanna one hundred pounds that is to say to each of my said two Daughters fifty pound and also that my said two sons Arent and Cornelius Shall pay between them to my Daughter Catharina the Sum of one hundred pounds and that one year after my wife remarriage or death which first happens and also that my said two sons Arent and Cornelius pay between them to my two sons Myndert and Johannes the Sum of two hundred pounds that is to say to each of My said two sons Myndert and Johannes each one hundred pounds and that four years after the death or remarriage of my said Wife Which first happens

All the rest and residue of my personal Estate which I have not herein before bequeathed I give and bequeath unto my Seven Children to wit Suster wife of John Peek Susanna Wife Lucas Wyngaart Veeder Catharina Arent Myndert Cornelius and Johannes to be divided between them Share and Share alike to the one no more than to the other

Lastly I hereby nominate and appoint my two brothers Jacobus Bradt and Abraham Bradt Executors to this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills heretofore by me made Willing that this and no other be my last Will and Testament In Witness Whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal the day and year first above written

Signed and Sealed published and Declared by the Testator as and for his Last will & Testament in the presence of us who have hereunto written our names as Witnesses thereto

Samuel Bradts Will

Be it remembered that on the twelfth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and two personally appeared before me Abraham Lansing surrogate of the said County Margaret Van Dyck & James J Peek of the Town of Schenectady in the said County who being respectively duly sworn on their oaths declared that they did see Samuel Bradt late of the said Town sign and Seal the Instrument wrote on this sheet of paper and purporting to be the last will and testament of the said deceased, and heard him publish and declare the same as and for his last Will and Testament that at the Time thereof he was of sound disposing Mind and Memory to the best knowledge and belief of these deponents, that the mark set there to by the name of the said Margaret Van Dyck and the name of James J Peek are respectively the mark and name of these deponents subscribed by them-and they did also see Dirk Van Ingen the other Witness subscribe his name as Witness in the presence of the Testator and also that Abraham Bradt the surviving Executor in the said Will named likewise appeared before me and was duly sworn to the faithful performance and Execution thereof by taking the usual oath in that Case provided
